Plant Dyestuffs

All dyestuffs are £6 for 50g

We supply a range of dried plant dyestuffs, grown and harvested with care in our dye plant garden in Dartington, South Devon. For most dyestuffs we recommend equal weight of dyestuff to mordanted fibre, but check recipies in books or online. We do not currently supply mordants

Dyer’s Chamomile

Dyer’s Coreopsis

Dried flowers produce yellow and orange dyes, depending on pH. Stronger dyebaths can give rich chestnut and mahogany colours.

Walnut Husks

Juglans regia

The husk is the soft, green part of the walnut fruit that surrounds the shell and nut. As they dry and oxidise, they turn black due to tannins and other chemicals. A substantive dye, producing a range of pinks through to rich chestnut browns. These become dark chocolates and blacks with an iron water modifier.
